This process can lead to the formation of sack-like protrusions in the bronchi that do not degenerate \u2013 bronchiectasis.<\/p>\n<p>The protrusions, in which viscous phlegm collects, are an ideal <strong>breeding ground for pathogens and harmful substances<\/strong>. Bronchiectasis thus increases the risk of recurring infections among affected persons, or may help preserve already-existing infections.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms and diagnosis<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Coughing (sometimes bloody) with secretions<\/li>\n<li>Frequent respiratory tract infections<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Bronchial cramping (bronchospasms)<\/li>\n<li>Thoracic pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Possible bronchiectasis should especially be considered in cases of asthma or COPD patients who do not respond to guideline-based treatment.<br \/> Even in younger patients or lifelong non-smokers, the described symptoms are a possible indication of bronchiectasis.<\/p>\n<p>The diagnosis is made with the aid of image-guided procedures \u2013 <strong>X-ray imaging and computerised tomography (CT)<\/strong> \u2013 as well as additional tests such as a lung function test, a sputum analysis, and a bronchoscopy.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.2&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2>Bronchiectasis: Therapy<\/h2>\n<p>Depending on the underlying disease, medications used are bronchodilating and anti-inflammatory drugs, mucus-loosening agents, and antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from medication-based therapy, patients have additional <strong>options for treatment<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respiratory physiotherapy has the primary goal of removing stubborn phlegm from the bronchial system. Such therapy involves, for example, special coughing techniques, percussion massage, and respiratory exercises.<\/li>\n<li>Use of <strong>respiratory therapy devices<\/strong> such as the <a title=\"RC-Cornet bei Bronchiektasie\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cegla.de\/en\/products\/respiratory-therapy\/rc-cornet\/\">RC-Cornet\u00ae<\/a> \u2013 or its further development, the <a title=\"RC-Cornet\u00ae PLUS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cegla.de\/en\/products\/respiratory-therapy\/rc-cornet-plus\/\">RC-Cornet\u00ae PLUS<\/a> \u2013 free the lungs from phlegm and make expectoration easier.<\/li>\n<li>Regular saline solution inhalations with nebulisers moisten the airways and prevent infections.<\/li>\n<li>An increased intake of fluids reduces the thickness of the mucus and makes expectoration easier.<\/li>\n<li>Inoculations against the flu virus (annual) and pneumococci reduce the risk of infection.<\/li>\n<li>In exceptional cases, surgical removal of the bronchiectasis is also a treatment option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
